Four of Nine Standards
For the cairn aficionado, Nine Standards Rigg is a must visit location with its rather varied collection of substantial and well-built edifices. The surrounding moor is pretty peaty (and suffering a lot of erosion from the popularity of the Coast-to-Coast walk) so it's hard to see quite where so much rock came from or why it seemed necessary to pile it all up in such a small area, but it certainly makes for a landmark visible from far away if you are lucky enough to be approaching in weather such as we had. I recall on my previous visit in 1975 that although sunny and hot, it had been dry for so long that a persistent haze had reduced visibility very much, so it was a great pleasure to revisit after all these years and get a good view!
