The fog signal has now been decommissioned - fortunately for the inhabitants of the house beneath! The Cleveland Way winds its way in front of the Fog Signal Station and behind the Whitby High Light.
The "Hawsker Bull" seemed to sound for weeks on end when we went to school in Whitby.
It did indeed have something of the sound of a mournful bull bellowing!
In calm weather it could be heard over a huge area, it was commonly noticed the full length of the Esk Valley - especially when the North Sea Mist was blowing inland.
