The lighthouse named after Whitby is in fact some distance out of town. Since the lights were all automated, the light keepers cottages on either side have been converted to holiday lets.
The "Hawsker Bull" seemed to sound for weeks on end when we went to school in Whitby.
It did indeed have something of the sound of a mournful bull bellowing!
In calm weather it could be heard over a huge area, it was commonly noticed the full length of the Esk Valley - especially when the North Sea Mist was blowing inland.
