Reginald's Tower, Waterford
Reginald's Tower, Waterford
Reginald's Tower is a significant landmark located at the eastern end of the Waterford’s quay. The oldest civic building in Ireland, Reginald's Tower was built on the site of a Viking fort by the Anglo-Normans after their conquest of Waterford. The present 54-foot high tower is likely to have been built in the 13th or 14th century and has been in usage for different purposes over centuries; as a mint in the 15th century, as a munitions store during the 17th and 18th centuries, and as a prison in the nineteenth century. It is the only urban monument in Ireland to retain a Norse or Viking name; the tower's name is derived from an Anglicised form of the Irish name Raghnall, which is in turn a Gaelicised form of the Old Norse Røgnvaldr.
