The Maypole, Holywood (June 2018)
The maypole at the High Street/Shore Road/Church Road (foreground) crossroads. There is no definitive date for the original pole. A Wikipedia article says “according to local folklore, it dates from 1700, when a Dutch ship is said to have run aground on the shore nearby, and the crew erected the broken mast to show their appreciation of the assistance offered to them by the townsfolk” without a source.
The National Museum of Ireland states “May Poles were popular in some large towns and possibly indicate a certain English influence. In this festive way communities welcomed in the summer. There were May poles in many towns, such as Kilkenny, Mountmellick, Kildare and Longford. There was also a strong tradition in the north east of Ireland, such as in Hollywood [sic], Co. Down”.
Not mentioned in the 1832 Ordnance Survey Memoirs and not marked (here) on the PRONI 1832/46 map.
