SE6656 : Blue Atlas Cedar, Breezy Knees Gardens
taken 6 years ago, near to Stockton on The Forest, York, England
A sign within this garden tells us "This section, designed as an 'antidote' to the rest of the garden, has no flowers. The conifers were planted in 2 stages with the larger ones put in about 16 years ago (ie about 2002) and the dwarf varieties 7 years ago (about 2011)." The sign also tells of the problems they have had with deer getting in through the original fence and killing trees, and their more robust fence which replaced it.
Breezy Knees is a fairly new garden, about 5 miles east of York near the village of Warthill. It occupies about 20 acres, divided up into a series of separate gardens each with an individual theme.
Development started in the late 1990s when belts of trees were planted in former farmland to create windbreaks. Planting of the gardens started about 6 or 7 years later.
The planting is almost entirely of perennial plants. Much of the work is carried out by part-time gardeners so they only have the equivalent of 2 full-time gardeners.
The gardens are open from the beginning of May to the end of September (in 2018), see their website for details and prices - Link
