Summit end of an Abandoned Holloway in Wendover Woods
The picture shows the remains of an abandoned track on the almost flat area in the woods to the west of the new car park. It is part of an ancient track that lead up from Wendover towards the summit. This picture is looking down the gently sloping ground.
As the series of pictures show the track become more and more deeply incised into the hillside as the gradient increases. This is because it was used for hundreds of years to drive cattle from the valley to the hilltop, and the chalk has been eroded away to form a holloway.
Such holloways are common all along the Chiltern Escarpment.

The 2018 Changes at Wendover Woods :: SP8809

During 2018 the Forestry Commission are significantly upgrading the facilities for visitors in Wendover Woods. The existing "Cafe in the Woods" (open in 2007) is being replaced by a much larger cafe with a magnificent view over a wooded Chiltern Valley. The existing toilet block is becoming an information point. The children's play area (which tended to get rather muddy in wet weather) is being replaced by a car park for about 500 cars, and the new play area will be between the new cafe and "Go Ape." A new road is being constructed to help separate cars from pedestrians.
