Ireland in Ruins: Clonbrock House, Co. Galway (1)
Clonbrock was built in c.1790 and was designed by William Leeson for Robert Dillon, the 3rd Baron Clonbrock. It remained in the possession of the Dillon family for almost 200 years until it was sold in 1976 by its last occupant, Miss Ethel Dillon. The contents of the house was sold off in an auction that included the estate papers, these being acquired for the nation by the National Library of Ireland. A fire destroyed the house in 1984, and it has remained a ruin ever since.
