Castles of Connacht: Castle Connor, Mayo
Castles of Connacht: Castle Connor, Mayo
This castle on a low promontory by the River Moy is thought to have been built by Peter de Birmingham in the 1230s. The O'Dowds rebuilt the castle in 1520, and it was a Tadhg O'Dowd who fell to his death from the battlements in 1580. In 1594 his son David was murdered here by his own fireside in 1594 by an English soldier. The O'Dowds were dispossessed in 1656, their lands forfeited to Lewis Wingfield.
