Cramphorn shelter on promenade
This photograph shows (to right) a promenade shelter with the inscription, 'A Bequest by the late Mr T. J. D. Cramphorn 1912'.

Alderman Thomas John Deeks Cramphorn, J.P. (1845-1912) was six times Mayor of Chelmsford (in 1893, 1897 and 1908-11 inclusive). On his death, the Rev. W.J. Pressey said that he was 'in many ways in active and whole-hearted sympathy with the poor'.

This shelter is opposite Lancaster Gardens East and near the Moot Hall. Visible in the photograph are the cliff-top promenade, the beach with fish-tail groynes recently installed and, in the distance, Clacton Pier.
