The architecture of the Look Out Posts (LOPs) of The Coast Watching Service is unmistakable, each flat roofed building was built of 137 pre-cast concrete blocks with a large bay window at one end and a door at the other. 83 LOPs were built all maintaining a 24/7 watch of the coast and the air above reporting all logged sightings to G2 (Irish Military Intelligence) which increasingly shared the information with UK Naval Intelligence. The posts were numbered in a clockwise direction round the coast of Ireland, Ballagan being LOP No1 and Inishowen Head at the mouth of the Foyle in Donegal being LOP 82. The last to be built, LOP 83, was in Co Kerry. Each LOP was manned by volunteers under the command of a Corporal. Corporals were paid four shillings a day.
