Tintagel Volcanic Formation at Trebarwith Strand
Fellow geologist Gavin points to an outcrop of volcanics that are exposed at Trebarwith Strand. These early Carboniferous volcanics (basic and alkali) were formed from intraplate (within a tectonic place not near a boundary) activity. I don't know but they are probably a result of minor crustal extension - this is also the cause of similar volcanics in Derbyshire.
The volcanics were interbedded with mudstones but now the entire rock package has been metamorphosed to greenschists. The metamorphic grade in the area is slightly higher than the rest of the south-west; this is due to the major faulting caused by the inversion of the Culm basin during the Variscan Orogeny.
