SU3716 : Bridge replacement works
taken 6 years ago, near to Upton, Hampshire, England
A concrete bridge carried the A3057 Romsey Road over the M27 motorway at Nursling. It was built in the 1970s and had a design life of 25 years. In 2016 bridge inspectors identified failings in the bearings, meaning the bridge was unable to move as designed. Developing cracks had also been observed in the ends of the pre-stressed concrete beams.
Structural monitoring equipment was installed to give early warning of any deterioration. A 26 tonne weight limit was imposed. Utilities running over the bridge were diverted.
In 2018, a scheme to replace the bridge was implemented. This involved works on the south side of the M27 west of the bridge. It was planned to build a new bridge on site, close the motorway, demolish the old bridge, and move the new bridge into position.
See Link for demolition operations over the weekend of September 29 & 30 2018.
