Some photographs of the Belfast branch of “BHS” (British Home Stores) – a long-established national retailer which became insolvent and passed into administration on 25 April 2016.
The site is now the subject of the following application (22 November 2017) for planning permission “LA04/2017/2681/F Refurbishment and reconfiguration of building including installation of new external fabric, new entrances, shopfronts, service access and services connections. 25 to 13 castle Lane 9 to 3 Cornmarket 24 to 26 Castle Place and direct elevations including 15 to 11 and 6 to 18 Castle Arcade BelfastLA04/2017/2681/F Refurbishment and reconfiguration of building including installation of new external fabric, new entrances, shopfronts, service access and services connections. 25 to 13 castle Lane 9 to 3 Cornmarket 24 to 26 Castle Place and direct elevations including 15 to 11 and 6 to 18 Castle Arcade Belfast”.
British Home Stores was founded in London in 1928.
The department store is known for selling clothes and home ware.
In 2009 there were 193 stores employing over 17,000 people.
By 2015 there were only 171 stores employing 11,000 staff. The group was sold to Retail Acquisitions who drew up a list of 52 under-performing stores that they could close, sell off or downsize.
