The stonework declares the date as 1900. The Cavendish Hotel’s predecessor, the Oddfellows’ Arms, together with the Queen’s Head Inn on the opposite side of the road, had created a bottle-neck in Cavendish Street. In 1899 T Ramsden and Sons had acquired the Oddfellows’ Arms on condition that they replace it with a grander hostelry. On completion of the Cavendish Hotel the Queen's Head was closed and demolished. An early 1900s photograph shows the Cavendish with a door on the corner and no buildings immediately to the east. Searching my directories I find; Oddfellows’ Arms, not listed before 1881; 1881-1887 John William Peckover; Queen’s Head, not listed before 1866; 1866 Abraham Mitchel; 1870 Matthew Mitchell; 1881 George Watson; 1887 George Henry Pickles.
