Former Kodak Express shop (Irwins), 69 North Main Street, Youghal, Co. Cork
This former Kodak Express shop is located on the corner of North Main Street and O'Rahilly Street. For all of the 20th century Kodak was one of the leading names in the photographic industry. Unfortunately with the advent of the digital era it failed to compete successfully with rivals and today is a much smaller company although it still manufactures traditional camera film, movie film products, and colour printing papers, as well as having diversified into other fields. The Kodak Express shops were a franchise operation with Kodak supplying the branding, knowledge and supplies. They offered printing and other photographic services. There are still many in existence although numbers have reduced. This one is clearly undergoing renovation although presumably not to re-open as an Express shop.
Kodak had another connection with Youghall as for several years it operated a manufacturing facility in the town where it produced blank recordable CD and DVD discs. Sadly this closed in 2003 with the loss of 200 jobs. As the town's other factories have closed in recent years, the town's prosperity appears to have declined with many closed shops, pubs and other premises in the main streets.
