SD8557 : Galatea taking on water

taken 6 years ago, near to Hellifield, North Yorkshire, England

Galatea taking on water
Galatea taking on water
Steam locomotives need a copious supply of water to operate and have to be 'topped up' with up to 20,000 litres every 100-200 km or so but the water-supply infrastructure was dismantled at the end of regular steam operation in the 1960s. At Hellifield, an improvised supply from a standpipe is being used to fill up the tender of Jubilee class locomotive 45699 Galatea, before she resumes her journey to Carlisle on an excursion.
