TF0689 : Bishops Bridge, West Rasen

taken 5 years ago, near to West Rasen, Lincolnshire, England

Bishops Bridge, West Rasen
Bishops Bridge, West Rasen
Grade II* Listed and Scheduled Monument. Thought to have been built in 1310 by Bishop John Dalderby, Bishop of Lincoln 1300 to 1320. Dalderby built another bridge over the Rase two miles north-west. A watermill recorded here in 1275 suggests there was probably a timber bridge here and records show tolls collected from a bridge in West Rasen from 1262. The body of Ivo le Gaunter was recovered from under a bridge here in 1280. The adjacent road bridge was built in 1856 replacing a ford. It is said in times of flood smaller two wheel traps removed a wheel so they could be manhandled over the packhorse bridge.
