Hellifield was not much more than a hamlet until the railway arrived in the 1860s and then grew rapidly. The spiritual needs of the workers and their families were met by nonconformist chapels until the established church in lumpy 'free Gothic' style finally arrived in 1905; it is Grade-II listed: Link .
SD8556 : Fish and Chip shop off Main Road, Hellifield I have eaten here a few times, usually on a return trip from the Lakes. This green hut is not just a fish and chip shop; the nearest section is a fish restaurant. The food here is 1st class and surpassed only by the service.
