St Mary's Marshes
The marshes in the 19th century were infested with mosquitoes which caused the 'ague' - malaria. The farmers became immune to it but when their wives died the farmer would go back to the higher land and bring another woman down to the marshes to marry. They also soon succumbed to the ague as they had no resistance as did the children. That was Pip's brothers and sisters at the start of Great Expectations. The farmer would then go back to find another wife.
