SU8053 : Basingstoke Canal: Reading Road Bridge

Basingstoke Canal: Reading Road Bridge
Basingstoke Canal: Reading Road Bridge
The original brick arch bridge, built around 1792 was replaced in 1892. That, in turn, was replaced in 1953 with this low-level one which has the dubious (and unwanted) distinction of being the lowest bridge on the canal. At the time of construction in 1953 the canal was semi-derelict and no thought was given to the possibility of restoration and reuse by canal craft, which would need greater headroom.
