Although reputed to be the infirmary, this building was more likely accommodation for lay brothers or for guests. Built in the 15th century, the building was much altered in the 16th and 17th century and relegated to agricultural use. There are a number of later additions and alterations. A Cistercian Abbey, it was founded in 1278, one of the latest in England and the most westerly. The church is late 13th and early 14th century. After the dissolution the abbey was converted into a house, unusually it was the church that was converted and the other buildings demolished. Now in the care of the National Trust it is presently a museum.
