Established in late-1917 as No. 22 Training Depot Station for the Royal Flying Corps, Gormanston Camp was variously used by the British Army, R.I.C. and Free State Army during the 1920s. Mothballed from 1928 until WW2. The Irish Air Corps transferred to here from Shannon in 1945 and it remained in use as an airfield until c. 2002. Camp and nearby firing range still used for training by the army.
