The Chinese arch on St Andrew's Street
The arch marks the entrance to the area known as Chinatown in Newcastle from all the Chinese restaurants here. The arch is the genuine article, built by craftsmen from Shanghai in 2004. Note also the traditional lions on either side.
Newcastle's 'new' co-op was built on Newgate Street in 1932. Although 'art decor' in style, it gave more than a nod to Egypt where Howard Carter's discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb had just taken place. See http://www.timmonet.co.uk/html/newcastle_co-op.htm
