The Thames and Severn Canal was opened in 1789 and closed in 1927.
The towpath is a public footpath and from Sapperton Tunnel portal to Coatesfield Bridge is part of three long distance paths - The Monarch's Way, The Thames & Severn Way and Wysis Way.
