The Old Ship Inn, 16 High West Street, Dorchester
Grade II Listed Inn. One of the oldest, if not the oldest pub in Dorchester it received a £200,000 refurbishment late in 2018. It was supposedly bought by a retired sailor in 1619 and that is reportedly where its name the Old Ship Inn originates from. Some of the inns 17th century panelling was reset in Handel House. A recent landlord said there are tunnels which run beneath it to the old courts. Pianist Russ Conway was a frequent visitor to the inn and now they say his ghost can sometimes be heard playing ragtime. Directory entries include; 1842-1844 in High West Street we have beer retailer George Adams 1851-1852 we have beer retailer Charles Sargent; 1855 again, beer retailers James Bly or Henry Gale; 1859-1875 George New (1859 just 'Ship'); 1889 Michael Walsh; 1895 Richard Walters; 1911 Harry Prime; 1915 Richard Eminson. It appears that it was just a beer house until George New took over in the late 1850s.
