The anchor was recovered in 1999 from the wreck of the Finnish barque Birger. The Birger struck the Saltscar Rock at Redcar on October 18, 1898.
The anchor was refurbished and placed on the Esplanade as part of the £30m regeneration of the seafront by Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council and the Environment Agency.
