James Fleet Sutherland and Alexander MacDonald
One of the memorials on the railings at Knightsbridge
SJ8990 : Memorial railings at Knightsbridge remembering the crew of the SS Stockport.
This one remembers James Fleet Sutherland age 28 Able Seaman and Alexander MacDonald age 31 Able Seaman.
"Captain Fea described escorting SC-107. "From this time U-boats were incessant. It seemed to me just a succession of ships being torpedoed and sinking, and a constant stream of survivors coming aboard to care for. The sights they saw were heart-breaking. Two steamers, names unknown, were blown to pieces before our eyes with no survivors:" The Stockport rescued upwards of two hundred men that day, and three hundred and fifty overall whilst escorting SC-107. "
Memorials to the crew of SS Stockport The crew of SS Stockport rescued 413 survivors from torpedoed ships during the Second World War. Built as a cargo vessel, it was chartered by the Admiralty to be a rescue ship. From October 1941 until early spring 1943 it took part in 16 convoys. At 3.12 am on February 23rd 1943, U-boat, U-604, fired four torpedoes at the Stockport and scored two hits. The ship sank within three minutes east of Cape Race, Newfoundland with the loss of the entire crew of 64.
Alongside the improved junction at Knightswood and Great Portland Street, memorial railings have been erected overlooking the River Goyt at Park Bridge. On the railings are a series of memorials to the lost crew.
