The gate allows to take water from the reservoir Link and feed it into the canal near the top of the Tardebigge flight of locks. The level of the reservoir is below the topmost locks of the flights, so an additional supply was provided into the top pound of the flight via a pumping engine Link . The reservoir can be seen beyond the wall; the canal is behind the camera.
