SE7295 : The scant remains of Rosedale Abbey

The scant remains of Rosedale Abbey
The scant remains of Rosedale Abbey
Anyone visiting here in the hope of seeing a building to compare with Rievaulx or Fountains is going to be disappointed, for this small buttressed pier with internal staircase is all that remains of the Priory for Cistercian nuns that was established here around 1150; so not even an abbey. The Priory would have fallen into disrepair following the dissolution in the 1530's and no doubt the stones would have been put to good use for farmhouses and walls. The nearby church did remain for some time, but was rebuilt in the 19th century when the dale had a much larger population than it has now.
