Carlisle Castle, inside the halfmoon battery
Carlisle Castle, inside the halfmoon battery
The halfmoon battery is a defensive structure built below ground level in front of the gatehouse Link of the inner castle ward. Two staircases outside the gatehouse give access to a narrow semi-circular passageway with square gaps on the outer wall through which attackers crossing the ditch could be shot at. The battery was added to the castle in 1542 on the orders of Henry VIII.
