Carlisle Castle: coat of arms
The coat of arms of Elizabeth I is set in the castle wall
Link next to the keep
Link , in the inner courtyard. Showing the English lions and the French fleur-de-lys, it demonstrates the monarch's claim to both thrones (although no French possessions were left by the time of Elizabeth's reign). Underneath it shows the royal motto, "Dieu et mon droit" ("God and my right") and the year 1577. I cannot decipher the text in the block beneath the coat of arms.
