NY7205 : The approach to Smardale

taken 5 years ago, near to Ravenstonedale, Cumbria, England

The approach to Smardale
The approach to Smardale
The footpath from Ravenstonedale passes through the gateway and then downhill towards the old bridge, which can just be seen towards the left of the photo. To the right of the bridge is a sandstone quarry, this rock underlying the carboniferous limestone and coming to the surface at this point. Smardale is a deeply incised valley with a beck heading north towards the Vale of Eden.
