This detail of the more northerly of the two granaries (horrea) shows the low pillars supporting a raised floor keeping the supplies relatively safe from damp and rodents. Holes in the outer wall weren't intended to make it easier for rats to get in but to allow dogs to get in to chase the rats who would find ways in anyway, while of course improving ventilation as well. The wall in the background is part of Hadrian's Wall, in this section a rubble-filled double stone wall on top of a natural escarpment, the Whin Sill Link .
