The Royal Pier, Aberystwyth
The Royal Pier, Aberystwyth
The pier was one of the first to open in Wales on Good Friday in 1865. Within just a few months a severe storm washed away 30 metres. After a change of ownership the pier was extended by 70 metres. A pavilion seating 3,000 people was added at the end of the 19th century but the weather would once again destroy most of the pier in 1938. It was not until 1979 that the remaining 91 metres was repaired and various facilities added. Today, Royal Pier consists of an ice-cream shop, a pub, a snooker hall, a restaurant, an amusement arcade centre and also a nightclub.
