TQ4274 : Through the North Stone Bridge, Eltham Palace
taken 5 years ago, near to Eltham, Greenwich, England
An English Heritage property, the site has an interesting history. Originally a medieval Royal palace (hence the name), only the 15th century Great Hall of it remained, derelict, by the 19th century. It was restored, and a large new house built adjacent to it, by Stephen and Virginia Courtauld in the 1930s. It was used during the Second World War and until 1992 by the Army Education Corps. Since 1999 it has been opened to the public. For a fuller history see Link
As a major historic site, not only are the remains of the medieval palace a Scheduled Ancient Monument (List entry Number 1014833), and the Great Hall listed Grade I (LEN 1079041) but the gardens and Eltham Court (LEN 1212906, the 20th century house) are listed grade II* and several buildings and individual remains such as walls and bridges on the site are separately listed.
