Radyr Weir and Hydro-electric
Radyr Weir and Hydro-electric
Radyr Weir was originally constructed in 1774 to supply water to the Melingriffith Tin Plate Works.
In 2016 a hydro electric power generation plant was installed based on two Archimedes screws. These channel more than 500 million cubic metres of water per year and generate 400 kW — enough energy to power three of the city’s leisure centres — which will save 700 tonnes of CO2 annually.
The weir is a good place to spot cormorants and herons and in November salmon can be seen moving upstream.
