Located along the promenade, it includes the following text:

The first houses in the small village that developed into the town of Portstewart were built in this area during the late 1790s.

The first man-made harbour was developed here by landlord John Cromie in 1826. Prior to that time, the small open fishing boats used by the few fishermen who lived here were hauled up onto the rocky foreshore.
Portstewart harbour is also the base for the River Bann pilots who guide ships in and out of the Port of Coleraine.
Boats sailing from the harbour provided the inspiration for the Irish songwriter Jimmy Kennedy to pen his famous ballad "Red Sails in the Sunset".

Jimmy Kennedy's life is commemorated by the nearby sculpture, "Fishing Boat" by artist Niall O'Neill. Combining Celtic and Viking decorative touches, on further inspection the boat reveals itself to be a giant swooping fish with a shell in its mouth, adding an element of the surreal to the seafront.
Victorian novelist Charles Lever also lived nearby for a time. His house, just across the road from the Kennedy sculpture, is indicated by a "Blue Plaque", located at 22a The Promenade.
Portstewart Promenade formed part of the famous "North West 200" motorcycle road race circuit right up until the 1970s. The famous Henry's Corner at the harbour and the Carraig-na-cule building were popular vantage points from which to watch the races.
