NO 6855: At different times, there have been alternative views and understandings about the origin, nature and purpose of Maryton Law. In the New Statistical Account, of the 1840’s, Reverend William Reid of Maryton Parish believed that it was a “Gallow Hill” and the Earl of Southesk considered it to have been a place of execution for the lordship or Barony of Old Montrose.
Prior to modern times, Maryton Law was widely considered be a cairn or a medieval motte or possibly both. In 1966, archaeological investigations showed it to be a prehistoric mound, possibly dating to the 3’rd millennium BC, and that it was probably reused for subsequent burials after it was first built.
Maryton Law is a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Can you add to this discussion with further information, insights and knowledge?
