Serpentine Gallery Pavilion 2019

Each summer the Serpentine Gallery builds a tea pavilion by an architect who hasn't designed a building in England before. In 2019 it is designed by Junya Ishigami and Associates of Tokyo. The structure is a curved roof of irregular slates supported on thin steel rods. The lawn around is built up into a mound so the roof seems to grow out of the ground, and inside the space is like a cave. The architect seeks harmony between man-made structures and those that already exist in nature.
