Citylink Tram-Train 399 206 at Rotherham Parkgate tram stop, Rotherham
The pilot tram-train service from Sheffield Cathedral tram stop to Rotherham Parkgate opened in late October 2018 after years of delay and the usual cost over-runs. It is a pilot because the results are supposed to provide guidance for further tram-train projects elsewhere in the UK. That is the theory although the Welsh Assembly are already pressing ahead with a tram-train scheme for Cardiff & the South Wales Valleys without waiting to see what happens on this pilot. That's not surprising because tram-trains have been successfully running in Germany and France for many years but the UK Government Department for Transport often wants to re-invent the wheel, usually at enormous expense.
The tram-train is one of a small batch built by Vossloh/Stadler in Valencia, Spain in 2015/16. It is operated by Stagecoach as part of the Sheffield Supertram system. The route changes from railway track to tram track near Meadowhall and the tram-train service terminates at Cathedral stop in Sheffield's city centre.
