WWII Staffordshire: RAF Tatenhill - technical site - combined AML Bombing Teacher & Turret Gunnery Trainer (6)
Interior view of the section that housed the standard free Turret Gunnery Trainer. It typically would have had a steel framed tower containing a gunnery turret mock-up which the pupil under instruction would operate. In front on the end wall was a huge *hemispherical screen onto which was projected colour film of attacking enemy aircraft which the pupil would be "firing" at. Other sophisticated mechanics would record the accuracy (or otherwise) of the pupil's deflection shooting (a necessary technique for aiming gunfire at a fast moving target such as an aircraft).
*Remarkably in the turret gunnery trainer building at the former airfield of RAF Sleap in Shropshire, there is still in existence the steel frame of a hemispherical target screen.
