Moreton Corbet Castle - the Elizabethan Wing (1)
The Elizabethan south range at Moreton Corbet was a result of the extensive remodelling of the old stone castle begun by the Corbet family in the 16th century. Robert Corbet who inherited the castle began to transform his ancestral home, adding the new south range begun in c.1579. Robert had been ambassador to Antwerp, and his new building was clearly inspired by Flemish designs of the period. Robert died of the plague in 1583, and it was left to his two brothers Richard and Vincent who had inherited in turn to complete it. The house was severely damaged during the Civil War, but later repaired and reoccupied, but was subsequently abandoned as a residence in the 18th century.
