Taunton: red brick and polychromatic stone
Taunton: red brick and polychromatic stone
High Victorian Taunton on a fine July evening. The mid-Victorian terrace is "of exceptional quality" according to the Grade II* listing. The Grade I listed church is by Sir George Gilbert Scott (1858-63). The listing text hails "a showcase of Somerset stones" and "a striking composition in a rich EE style, set close to the street. The prominent tower, 80ft high, and banded spire are 'not at all in any local tradition' (Nikolaus Pevsner)".
