Welcome to Seton Collegiate Church
This is the first view of the building for visitors. The first church here was established in the 12th century for the parish of Seton but, by the 15th century, it was largely used as a private chapel and burial place for the Seton family. In 1470, the 1st Lord Seton set up the college, or community, of priests to pray for the souls of his family, a practice which continued until the Protestant Reformation of 1560.
The building was severely damaged after the 1715 Jacobite Rising in retaliation for the Setons’ support of the “Old Pretender”, James Edward Stuart. However, restorative work has produced a sound structure that's much sought-after for weddings. The church is in the care of Historic Environment Scotland.
