Alton station, looking north
Alton is the terminus for electric trains to and from London (Waterloo) which use platforms 1 and 2 seen here. The footbridge in the foreground is disused having been replaced in 2013 by the more modern structure seen farther up the platform. The station once served more lines than it does now. These included a light railway to Basingstoke (closed to passenegers 1932), the Meon Valley line to Fareham (closed to passengers 1955) and the Mid-Hants line to Winchester (closed to passengers 1973, but re-opened as the Watercress Heritage Line from 1977 onwards with a service from Alton to Alresford reinstated in 1985 and using platform 3).
