Castlegate, Grantham, Lincs.
The Grade II-listed Beehive public house is seen here from the town centre end of East Street. The upper end of East Street is at the top of a hill and it drops away behind the photographer. The pub sports an authentic, albeit untended beehive, high up in the tree behind the black car. A nearby plaque bears the following words: "Stop Traveller! This wondrous sign explore. And say, when thou has viewed it o'er, Grantham, now two rarities are thine: A lofty steeple and a living sign." This establishment dates from the late C18th, although its predecesor is said to have dated from the C16th. The "lofty steeple" referred to is the one belonging to the nearby parish church of St Wulfram.
