Beehive pub sign, Castlegate, Grantham, Lincs.
"The Beehive" pub sports an authentic, albeit untended beehive, in a tree outside it. A nearby plaque bears the following words: "Stop Traveller! This wondrous sign explore. And say, when thou has viewed it o'er, Grantham, now two rarities are thine: A lofty steeple and a living sign." This establishment dates from the late C18th, although its predecesor is said to have dated from the C16th. The "lofty steeple" referred to is the one belonging to the nearby parish church of St Wulfram.
