NY6208 : All Saints, Orton: old bells
taken 5 years ago, near to Orton, Cumbria, England
Although there may have been an earlier primitive structure on this site, the Parish Church of All Saints, Orton did not become a permanent stone structure until the early 13th Century. This was demolished – or collapsed – at an early date and the current Church was constructed in the 15th and early 16th Centuries. The perpendicular west tower is believed to date from 1504, while the porch was erected in 1607 and the chancel was rebuilt 1878-9.
The Church contains a fine collection of Victorian era stained glass, excepting the 20th Century window at the east end of the south aisle. A ring of eight bells is housed in the west tower, while three bells preserved in the north aisle date from between 1530 and 1637.
