NY6101 : Route of Roman road at Low Borrowbridge

taken 5 years ago, 3 km from Tebay, Cumbria, England

Route of Roman road at Low Borrowbridge
Route of Roman road at Low Borrowbridge
The fields either side of this road are classed as a scheduled ancient monument, the site of the Roman fort that guarded the Lune gorge. This Roman road alignment became a drove road in medieval times, and later a coaching route but is now bypassed by the present A685 to the west. It now carries little motor traffic but forms part of National Cycle Route 68.

In the background is a Pendolino train on the West Coast main line, dwarfed by the conical hill of Jeffreys Mount behind.
